  4. This "MARVIN'S BIDDING HANDBOOK" diskette contains everything I
  5. have written on the subject of contract bridge bidding over the
  6. last 20 years. Much of this material has been published in national
  7. bridge publications: Popular Bridge, The Bridge World, Contract
  8. Bridge Forum, and The Bulletin (American Contract Bridge League
  9. monthly). It is divided into "books" whose titles appear on the
  10. opening menu. Selecting a book from the menu brings up a menu of
  11. "chapters" for the selected book. Selecting a chapter results in
  12. its display on the screen. Be sure to press the F1 key (try it now)
  13. to discover the various user options that are available.

  15. For faster run speed, the diskette should be copied to a hard disk
  16. or ram disk directory, and the software run from there.

  18. The reader may not like a lot of my bidding conventions, treat-
  19. ments, or philosophy, but will surely find some acceptable ideas.
  20. At least this bidding handbook can be used as a checklist of
  21. bidding situations: Have you and your partner agreed on the meaning
  22. of all bids found herein, or on the bids that should be used for
  23. all hands described herein? I especially refer the reader to the
  24. chapters FORCING AND NON-FORCING SITUATIONS in the book "Four-Card
  25. Majors" and 4NT - BLACKWOOD OR NATURAL? in the book "Strong
  26. Bidding." These contain many sequences that partnerships should
  27. agree on: forcing, not forcing, Blackwood, not Blackwood.

  29. The diskette contains standard ASCII files, which can be read into
  30. any respectable word processing program for formatting (e.g., add
  31. a left margin and page breaks) and printing. Be sure to tell the
  32. word processor that you are "importing" an ASCII file. Or the files
  33. can be printed straight out when being viewed (press "P"), but the
  34. page breaks will not be acceptable, with bidding sequences and
  35. other stuff that should be on one page sometimes split onto two
  36. pages.

  38. The file "files.doc" associates a file name with every chapter of
  39. every book, for use by those who want to import handbook text into
  40. a word processing program. Be sure to export any revised file back
  41. to the diskette in ASCII format, and don't change any file names.

  43. Here's a project for partnerships that have not documented their
  44. understandings: Edit the ASCII files to change everything that you
  45. disagree with, or eliminate what is not wanted, or add what is
  46. wanted. Then the partnership will have its own handbook. Do not
  47. remove any files completely, or change any file names.

  49. This diskette may be freely copied and distributed to anyone, and
  50. the possessor is encouraged to do so. I ask only two favors: That
  51. none of the contents be used for money-making purposes, and that
  52. any errors, omissions, or inconsistencies found be reported to me.

  54. Some of the chapters in "Countermeasures" and "Marvin's Conventions
  55. and Treatments" are somewhat abbreviated. Any such have a note at
  56. the end of the file revealing what has been left out. The full text
  57. for both of these books may be purchased from the author, in the
  58. form of a diskette (that is not to be copied!) identical to this
  59. one but with the unabridged text of all chapters. Price is $30,
  60. which includes postage and, for Californians, sales tax.
